It is our great pleasure to announce that the RETI 2017 Symposium will be held on Friday and Saturday, November 17th and 18th, hosted by the University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan. The Autumn School for graduate students will subsequently be held on Monday and Tuesday, November 20th and 21st. The theme of the 2017 symposium is “Future Perspectives for Island Society: Sustainability and Self-Management,” including several suggested sub-themes, to cover a wide range of topics regarding issues on “islands.” We expect that both researchers and graduate students who are already conducting research in the field of island studies or who have recently been having academic interests in “islands” will have opportunities to share research outcomes and discuss the issues related to “islands.” “RETI 2017 Okinawa Symposium” will be the first RETI conference to be held in Asia. We would like to encourage many researchers and students from both RETI- and non-RETI- member universities all over the world to participate in the symposium in Okinawa.

About RETI (Réseau d’Excellence des Territoires Insulaires)

In July 2010, at the initiative of the University of Corsica Pasquale Paoli, 19 island universities from all over the world came together to create a common environment for academic and scientific work from islands on the subject of island status. At present, 27 universities have joined RETI and the University of the Ryukyus is the only member university in Asia.
